Join me on my journey.

Each year, the seasons continue to be pushed further and later into the calendar year.
A few years ago, the first snow in SE Michigan occurred on Halloween, just giving a small dusting and melting before noon November 1.
Folklore from Midwesterners who have lived in the same place since their childhood claims that back when they were those kids, they would go trick or treating with blankets of snow already on the ground and small snow banks beginning to form over the next few days as they shoveled off the sidewalks and streets.
Last year, there was no big snow in SE Michigan before the new year.
This year, as we slide over the cusp of mid-September and embrace the Fall Equinox with 80 degrees still as the highs in New York City and near 100 in Texas just last week, I can’t help but feel an absolute, horrible, deep-pitted dread.
What is actually insane, is how the rhetoric hasn’t changed in the last one to two decades or so. Since I was in elementary school, I have been hearing about the melting ice caps and the poor polar bears. Back in middle school, wind farms were all the rage. Since I was in high school it’s been “reduce-reuse-recycle”. In college, I think they were pushing bikes? Not entirely sure, but it was just before the EV boom.
And still nothing substantial ever came from it. We are still a nation driven by cars and trucks and independent vehicles on roads. Landfill trash is still the default for the majority of the nation save bigger cities and college campuses (the actual college campus not to be confused with the wider college town, still enthralled in the landfill life). And in fact, society has jumped on this AI bandwagon and you can’t go a day without seeing a headline about the datacenter takeovers.
As NYC heads into Climate Week and I scour through all the events and decide which ones I want to attend I cannot help but feel defeated given the history and what the billionaires and corporations continue to do.
Oh well…. In a few years I look forward to taking off my swim suit on my way to light the Christmas tree. (this joke lands if you’re from a place historically having 4 seasons/white Christmases, not from Texas and probably not from Florida to name a few)
As someone who grew up with a family into the performing arts and the absolute privilege to see West End and Broadway and Off-Broadway shows, including having my first show in London be les Miserables, one of my favorite songs to this day comes from that play.
“Do you hear the people sing?”
A uniting anthem for the cast as they go into the French Revolution.
“Singing the song of angry men?”
A key point from the events I attended day one of Climate Week is that we need to get angry and loud and find our commonalities and unite.
“It is the music of the people who will not be slaves again.”
The word slave has meant many things to many different people across the world. In a panel I witnessed this week, Vernice Miller-Travis quoted someone else (although the original voice I cannot remember) who drew a connection between the desires of the people post abolition and the desires of the people today.
· Accurate Representation in Government – why are we allowing people so far removed from the everyday man to be making policies for the everyday man? How is a death hoax for muppet man in the Senate very believable, photo attempts to silence misinformation touted as “fake” and using “AI”, and yet the man with an uncanny resemblance to this media icon has made his return and cast legitimate, full-power votes in Congress?
· Land Ownership – let the eruption of the struggling Millennial and Gen-Z crowds be heard despite the number reflecting the oldest members’ current ages. House? Never heard of her. More like apartment, unit, parent’s address on the statement notices.
· Equal Access – the overcrowded classrooms cry for support of even a sliver to that of the prestigious university. The man working two jobs who has not left the state he was born in rests his eyes in his recliner as ads for the tropical paradise of reality TV spew across his TV. The child goes without lunch in the summer due to not attending school while the patrons leave the restaurant with a quarter of their $100 meal left on the place.
And yet, while many people with a +1 phone code have these desires, the corporations are ”fueling their wallets” as they say goes with the construction of the data centers rapidly progressing despite community complaints.
Let this be our unifier.
Let this be our chance.
Let’s stick it to the machine (please, watch The Musical w/ Will Brill if you have the chance. Brilliant).
Let us get angry and put a stop to people’s wallets, or more like the change in their coin purse compared to what’s actually lining their wallets, ruling our lives
Embrace the narrative of our brothers who orchestrated the Boston Tea Party and continue with the Flock camera destruction, protest the data center construction, and fight the battles against those shooting our money off to other country’s battles instead of easing the battles we are enduring every day to be proud Americans.
Okay, I will shut up now.
But for real –
‘cuz this shit pisses me off.
let’s organize
